UPROAR

My design retells Cinderella’s story in a more modern 21st century way because it shows her realizing her self worth and deciding to push through to get what she deserves. This is represented by the dark plastic piece peeling away from her body to reveal bright lights and also lots of small mirrors to represent the self reflection she did. The silhouette of this dress is short, flirty, and rebellious rather than the traditional princess gown silhouette. I hope that my design can spark a feeling of hope and empowerment among the audience.

INSPIRATION

The scene my postcard depicts is the scene from Cinderella where she is trying on the glass slipper the prince had sent. I was very inspired by the feeling I got from looking at the postcard.

My design focuses on the theme of hope and feminism as reflected in the postcard through Cinderella’s facial expressions. Modern day Cinderella doesn’t just magically get a fairy godmother and a pumpkin carriage, she gathers courage and decides to finally get out of the miserable situation she had been living in for years. She doesn’t just get a happy ending, she creates her own happy ending, which isn’t just getting her Prince Charming, but getting the freedom to do whatever she wants- just like how she decides she doesn’t like the glass slippers anymore but likes the sneakers instead!

The dress I designed is made of vinyl and PET plastic. I used the vinyl because I wanted to use something that I could sew, but was still sturdy and held its shape. I used the PET plastic because it is thick and solid and would retain the asymmetrical shape of it peeling off from her body. To incorporate technology into my design, I laser cut my pattern shapes out of the plastic and used a heat gun to mold it to the dress form. I also used fairy lights to represent hope!
